Renault Sport Clio V6 – The Ultimate Hot Hatch Renegade.
The Renault Sport Clio V6 is one of the most radical and audacious hot hatches ever produced. When Renault Sport engineers decided to create a performance version of the Clio, they didn’t just tweak the engine or suspension; they rewrote the rulebook entirely. The result was the Clio V6, a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive powerhouse that defied convention and redefined what a hot hatch could be.
History and Lineage
Launched in 2001, the Renault Sport Clio V6 was a spiritual successor to the Renault 5 Turbo of the 1980s, another mid-engined monster that captured the hearts of enthusiasts. The concept behind the Clio V6 was simple yet extraordinary: take a small, practical hatchback, strip it down to its essentials, and then shoehorn a powerful V6 engine where the rear seats used to be.
The Clio V6 was developed in collaboration with Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), a British engineering firm known for its work in motorsport. The first phase of the Clio V6 was produced between 2001 and 2003, with a 230 horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine. In 2003, Renault launched the Phase 2 version, which saw improvements in power (up to 255 horsepower), handling, and build quality.
What made the Clio V6 so special was not just its engine but its layout. Unlike any other car in its segment, the Clio V6 featured a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration, which is typically reserved for supercars. This layout gave the car a unique driving experience, with a balance and poise that was unlike anything else on the market at the time.
Design and Engineering Excellence
From the outside, the Clio V6 was a far cry from the regular Clio. Its wide, muscular stance, flared wheel arches, and aggressive front and rear bumpers signalled that this was no ordinary hot hatch. The rear of the car, where the engine resided, was dominated by large air intakes and a centrally-mounted exhaust, emphasizing its performance-oriented nature.
The interior was stripped down to focus on driving. The cabin featured sporty bucket seats, a thick-rimmed steering wheel, and an instrument cluster that highlighted the car’s performance credentials. Unlike its front-wheel-drive siblings, the Clio V6 had no rear seats, as they made way for the large V6 engine that powered the car.
The Particular Car on Offer
The Renault Sport Clio V6 available here is a stunning example of this rare and sought-after model. This Phase 2 version, in particular, is highly desirable due to the enhancements in performance and build quality over the original. The car is finished in an eye-catching Illiad blue, a color that not only highlights its aggressive design but also stands out as a signature Renault Sport hue.
This Clio V6 has been meticulously maintained, with full service history and documentation to verify its provenance. The interior remains in excellent condition, with the original sport seats and trim showing minimal wear. Mechanically, the car is in superb condition, with the V6 engine delivering the raw, exhilarating performance that this model is renowned for.
