Coupe, Sport, Leichtbau. Three words that have become synonymous with the words Sheer Driving Pleasure. Widely regarded as the best BMW they ever made and an opinion we agree with whole heartedly. It was the direct competitor to the 996 GT3 and we believe that was BMW’s finest hour, boasting a near identical Nurburgring lap time and not to mention an intake noise that to this day is rarely beaten. Some will say it is completely ruined by the SMG gearbox but, for us, the challenge of driving around the gearbox made it that much sweeter. In the right hands it is insatiable.

Considering the above it’s quite hard to believe that the CSL never had an easy start to life in SouthAfrica. It was ferociously expensive, in the same league as the Porsche and, as we discussed, the gearbox was a real turn off when not used correctly. This led to dismal sales and it took BMW almost two years to sell all 65 units allocated to SouthAfrica. The extensive sales period also lead to massive depreciation, which means they were easily attainable for extremely low prices. Unfortunately, this resulted in many CSL’s being modified, extensively used, poorly maintained and a high number written off.

However, as we always say “the ugly duckling eventually becomes the swan”. BMW have gone backwards with their M cars and as a result this has put the CSL into elite status, a car from the bygone era when BMW were great and could stand toe-to-toe with Porsche. CSL prices have consistently risen over the last two years and examples of similar mileage are already trading in excess of 100 000 pounds.

Our example has only covered 25 200Km and presents as such. The metallic grey paintwork glistens in the sun and the alcantara interior presents phenomenally. A full-service history accompanies the vehicle along with the spare keys and books. Air conditioning (an option on the CSL) is present on this example.
