Mercedes-Benz 250SL Pagoda

SOLD

Ultra-rare factory ZF 5-speed manual
One of very few right-hand-drive examples built

A timeless classic and arguably the most desirable generation of the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL, the W113 “Pagoda” has long since secured its place among the greats.

Introduced in 1963 as the 230SL, the range was updated in 1966 with the 250SL. The 250 enjoyed a very short production run of roughly 14 months, during which just 5,196 units were built, making it the rarest of all Pagoda variants.

But as with most of our cars, we did not stop at “rare”. We went looking for the rarest version of the rarest Pagoda for our client.

The car you see here was factory-optioned with the exceptionally scarce ZF 5-speed manual gearbox, option code 230. It is believed that Mercedes-Benz produced only between 112 and 134 Pagodas in total with this transmission, across both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations. While exact numbers by steering position are not documented, multiple sources estimate that just 10 to 15 right-hand-drive examples were ever built. How many remain on the road today is anyone’s guess, but it is undoubtedly a tiny handful.

This example is remarkably original and has benefited from having just two careful custodians throughout its life. The new owners intend to embark on a no-expense-spared restoration, with the clear goal of making this Pagoda one of the finest examples anywhere in the world.
