The One-of-a-Kind Ford GT40
You may recognize this GT40 from the acclaimed 2019 film “Ford v Ferrari,” which showcased the legendary rivalry between Ford and Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. What many might not know is that the stunning GT40s featured in the film were crafted right here in South Africa by Hi-Tech Automotive, a company renowned for its meticulous recreations of classic GT40 and Shelby models.
This particular GT40 replica is exceptionally rare. In 2020, it was sold in a sealed bid auction that was held by 20th Century Fox and Shelby South Africa to fund a bursary program for a young South African automotive engineer.
What makes this GT40 a truly exceptional collector’s item is the dash segment adorned with the signatures of actors Christian Bale, Matt Damon, and the film’s director, James Mangold, as well as Aaron Shelby, the grandson of Carroll Shelby.
The auction winner, Mr. Heine Heroldt, a Shelby car enthusiast and collector, completed this GT40 with a 427 cubic inch, 500+ hp Ford V8 engine and a Quaife 5-speed transaxle, ensuring it performs as spectacularly as it looks.
At Prestige Marques, we are proud to have facilitated the sale of this truly unique and one-of-a-kind collector’s item to its new owner, allowing them to experience its remarkable history and exceptional provenance.
