The 550 Barchetta was unveiled in September 2000 and built to celebrate Pininfarina’s 70’th anniversary. The total number of units planned for production was 444 but due to Japanese superstition with the number 4 it was increased to 448. All 448 units were offered exclusively to Ferrari’s VIP clients and pre-sold prior to the vehicle being launched. The Barchetta was built as the successor to the Daytona spider, however production numbers were significantly lower on the Barchetta as opposed to its older sibling, 448 compared to 1406.

The biggest difference with the Barchetta to the Maranello was that the Barchetta essentially became a permanent roadster. The fabric roof was only good for speeds up to 120Kph, required a lot of time to mount onto the vehicle and would only provide protection against the lightest of rain.Due to this design Pininfarina and Ferrari were able to keep the weight down to the same of the Maranello thus enhancing the driving dynamics of the Barchetta. Another noticeable difference is the rake of the windscreen in comparison to the Maranello version, around 100mm lower. A set of Speedline wheels and aluminium fuel filler cap topped of the external aesthetic differences on the Barchetta amongst other small visual cues.

The model on offer was supplied brand new to Leonard Smith and one of only four Barchetta’s imported into South-Africa. Leonard Smith was a prominent Ferrari collector that owned a F50, 512 TR, 355 challenge and other highly limited Ferrari’s. Upon his passing in 2010 the car was bought by a good friend of Leonard who took care of the vehicle up until December 2023 when we purchased it. The vehicle is unique as it is the last Barchetta ever produced and comes with a lot of its provenance items that include driver’s helmets, caps, original signed application and delivery letter from Luca Di Montezemelo, original birth certificate, original brochure, original invoice, tool kit, service books and pictures from delivery that took place in Maranello, spare key and much more.Tubi exhausts are currently fitted to the vehicle, but the original exhaust will be supplied to the new owner along with the Tubi system.

Having only had two caretakes, while showing a mere 8 200Km on the clock and a full Ferrari service history this must be one of the finest examples of a Barchetta worldwide.
